Fire in a high rise building
Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic high-rise fire in Poplar, London, which resulted in the loss of one life, injuries and the evacuation of more than 50 residents

A tragic fire in a residential high-rise building in Poplar, East London, has resulted in the death of a man. Two other people were taken to hospital following the fire, which affected a flat on the 17th floor of the 22-storey building. Around 70 firefighters attended the incident.

Our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected by this incident.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and remains under investigation by the London Fire Brigade. The flat and its balcony were damaged by fire, and images from the incident also raise important questions about how the fire developed and spread externally. It is important not to speculate at this stage; the investigation will establish the cause and the circumstances surrounding the fire.

For residents everywhere, this tragedy is another reminder of the importance of having working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms cannot prevent a fire, but they can provide vital early warning when every second matters. Alarms should be tested at least monthly, and consideration should be given to additional smoke or heat detection in areas of the home where the fire risk may be greater.

Check your smoke alarms today. It only takes a few seconds.
